All cats are delightful – but for me the Traditional Persian cat is the most wonderful cat imaginable.
The Traditional Persian cat is the original Persian cat. All Persian cats in Europe were 'traditional' until the early 1980's. At this point in time, the interpretation of the breed standard changed and the look of the Persian cat changed dramatically.
The Traditional Persian cat is very different compared to the modern Persian generally seen today. Today, the pedigree Traditional Persian is an extremely rare cat. However, a few dedicated breeders continue breeding the Traditional Persian and work hard to preserve this beautiful pedigree cat.
In Germany this type of Persian cat is called European Persian or 'Perser mit Nase', in the USA Doll Face Persian. Traditional Persian and Classical Persian are also used. In Denmark and Scandinavia, they are called Classical Persians, old-fashioned Persians and Persian with a nose. All are names for the same type of Persian cat – a solid built cat with nose and muzzle - the way most Persian cats looked 20-30 years ago.
Traditional Persian and Classical Persian are not specific bred names that are used by the big cat clubs like FIFe, TICA and CFA. These clubs only use one term: Persian. However, since the difference between the original and modern Persian is so big terms like 'traditional', 'classical' and 'doll face' is used to differentiate the two.
The Traditional Persian is a medium to large cat. Heavy boned, solid – and with an overall impression of robust power. Legs are short and thick with big paws. Head massive and round on a short and broad neck. A broad nose and short and well proportioned muzzle – a handsome cat profile where a broad forehead is in proportionate and harmonic contrast to the nose and muzzle – with slight stop marking the transition. Small ears set wide apart. Large and round eyes. A fine soft textured long coat with prominent ruff. A calm and loving temperament.
Many people who have previously had Persian cats will recognize the type of Persian cats found on my homepage. Not so long ago the Traditional Persian cat could also be found in the ranks of show Persians. See for example Felicia - she became International champion in 1984.
If this is your first encounter with Traditional Persians I hope you will enjoy these pages – and explore my links to other Traditional Persian cat resources.
I aim to preserve and strengthen the Traditional Persian cat. I strive to do this in an environment that priorities the cats welfare and well-being.
