What are the differences between

the traditional and modern Persian cat ?

1. The Traditional Persian looks like the original Persian. See examples in the Historical Gallery.

2. The Traditional Persian has a nose and muzzle. The nose is broad and long - but not to long. Muzzle and nose seen in profile are snort - but not to snort. The profile is round and with a clear 'stop.' Like the profile, that is a part of my logo. My lovely Musashi is the model for this profile. The Traditional Persian has a sweet and 'smiling' expression.

3. The Traditional Persian is often bigger. The average size for a Traditional Persian male cat is 5-6,5 kg and for females 4-5 kg.

4.The Traditional Persian often has a more powerful and muscular build.

5. The Traditional Persian has larger ears. A good Traditional Persian from pure Traditional lines (all ancestors Traditional Persians) can often be identified not only by their nose and muzzle but also the relative large ears.

6. Sometimes - but not always the Traditional Persian has a shorter and more thick fur coat.

Is Traditional Persian an 'official' breed name ?

Traditional Persian, Classical Persian and Doll Face Persian are not  specific breed names that are used by the big cat clubs like FIFe, TICA and CFA. These clubs only use one term: Persian.

However, since the difference between the original and modern Persian is so big, terms like 'Traditional', 'classical' and 'doll face' is used to differentiate the two. The Traditional Persian is a pedigree cat just like the modern Persian. My cats are registered in Felis Danica as Persians.

In South Africa, there is a division within chinchilla Persians. The Traditional type is called Chinchilla Longhair.

The Traditional Persian cat is the original Persian cat. All Persian cats in Europe were 'Traditional' until the beginning of the 1980's. At this point in time the interpretation of the breed standard changed and the look of the Persian cat changed dramatically.

The Traditional Persian cat is very different compared to the modern Persian generally seen today. There are breeders that adhere to the Traditional Persian cat and work hard to preserve this beautiful pedigree cat.

In Germany this type of Persian cat is called European Persian or 'Perser mit Nase', in the USA Doll Face Persian. Traditional Persian and Classical Persian is also used. In Denmark and Scandinavia, they are called Classical Persians, old-fashioned Persians and Persian with a nose. All are names for the same type of Persian cat – a solid built cat with nose and muzzle - the way most Persian cats looked 20-30 years ago.

The Traditional Persian is a medium to large cat. Heavy boned, solid – and with an overall impression of robust power. Legs are short and thick with big paws.  Head massive and round on a short and broad neck. A broad nose and short and well proportioned muzzle – a handsome cat profile where a broad forehead is in proportionate and harmonic contrast to the nose and muzzle – with slight stop marking the transition. Small ears set wide apart. Large and round eyes. A fine soft textured long coat with prominent ruff. A calm and loving temperament.

Many people who have previously had Persian cats will recognize the type of Persian cats found on my homepage. Not so long ago the Traditional Persian cat could also be found in the ranks of show Persians. See for example Felicia - she became International champion in 1984.
